Donald and Lorna both feel that they are just the current custodians of a house that has a long history and that they have a responsibility to maintain and add to its traditional features wherever possible. They have been fortunate in having had an architect, Richard Mallinsonwith considerable experience of conservation projects who has guided them every inch of the way. With this approach in mind they sourced and worked with a team of talented crafts people details of which you will find below.
Wherever possible they have reused existing fittings. For example the bath in the balcony room ensuite is the original one but it has been reenamelled by Dave of Unique Enamellingand all five of the original sinks have been recovered by Nigel of Radiant Baths. The oak lounge panels and the stair banister have been renovated by Mr Evans of J K Evans & Sonsand his sons Derick and Gary have made the firesurround in the balcony bathroom and all the units and dresser in the kitchen. Donald and Lorna have added their own mark by fitting stain glass in the windows in the hall which they designed in conjuction with Bryony Benwell of The Glass House.
Of course they had to ensure that the main structure of the house was upto standard and worked with Brian Ebbrell of Ebbrell Construction on improving the roof, windows, creating ensuites and many other things - although it was Danny, Winky, Dave, Rob and James who did the work ! The artex has been skimmed throughout by Mark Jones (check out the hand turned covings in the bedrooms) and Dennis de Aguiar repaired some old and made matching new plaster mouldings. All the heating and plumbing has been installed by Steve Brown of SBS Services and the electrics by Gary, James, Nathan and Carl of IEBS.
It is often the finshing touches that add the glamour so Steve and Steve of S & S decorated throughout, a task not made easy for them as each room has at least four colours and magnolia is noticeable by its absence ! Katie Pugh has added to the uniqueness by painting a mural on the kitchen wall and Sue Prince decorated all the rooms with ornaments and floral displays - take a look at the specially designed Macintosh display in the main bathroom. All the stylish curtains, pelmets and blinds have been made by Leanda Peters and Serena and Carl Merry of Ashley Upholstery has upholstered the antique settees and chairs.
The extension of Mere Brook Cottage which encompases the conservatory, garden lounge and balcony has been expertly designed by Richard Mallinson and constructed by the very professional team from MellWood.
As with the main house we ensured that we worked with a skilled and dedicated team of crafts people to ensure that the renovation was completed to a high standard.
The design which has allowed us to convert a plain building into an impressive facility for our guests is down to the talent of Richard Mallinson who not only was our architect but also helped greatly with the project management.
The main contractor was JFW Construction Ltd from New Ferry with our main contact being one of the partners of the business Terry Cottier and it was also a pleasure to work with George their site manager who was both skilled and
patient. Paul Hamilton provided QS skills on behalf of JFW and has now learnt the art of managing a demanding female client (or was it the other way round).
IEBS Ltd led by Carl once again installed all the electrics ably assisted by Phil and Mike. Due to the retirement of Steve Brown the plumbing this time was carried out by Paul Reay of Par-One plumbing and heating installations with the help of his assistant Rachel. The tiles were all provided by Rossett Tiles of Parkgate Rd, Chester with the complex designs being fitted by Gary ….All the bathroom fittings were supplied by Clifton bathrooms at Birkenhead with the exception of the slipper bath which was purchased from Boundary Bathrooms.
A and S Woodfloors of Knowsley fitted the oak floor using the halfpenny technique which leaves a small gap between the boards as they did in the olden days.
Ivanka Bannister, of Ivanka Bannister furnishings made all the stylish curtains. The material for the lounge windows has been exclusively designed and printed for the cottage by Katie Pugh. The talented Katie Pugh also developed the design for the stain glass windows with Bryony Benwell owner of The Glasshouse creating the actual windows.
The majority of the lights were supplied by Italia lighting in Heswall.
